The final deadline to apply for a Livestock Indemnity Program payment is fast approaching.
The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 authorized LIP to provide benefits to livestock producers who lost livestock, in excess of their normal herd mortality, due to weather-related events. For 2011 calendar year losses the deaths must have been caused by adverse weather that occurred before Oct. 1.
In 2011 many producers filed a notice of livestock loss with their local FSA office. These loss notices resulted from weather related events ranging from excessive heat, to blizzard conditions, to tornadoes. After completing the notice of loss a producer must follow-up at his or her local FSA office to complete the second step of the LIP application process. The second step is the Application for Payment.
If you are a producer who made a timely notice of loss in 2011 and have not completed the LIP application for payment, please visit your local FSA office on or before Jan. 30 to complete the process. Producers who file a notice of loss, but do not file a timely application for payment, will not be eligible for LIP benefits. There are no late filed provisions for producers who miss the Jan. 30 deadline.
To learn more about LIP or any other FSA program please call your local FSA office or visit FSA online at www.fsa.usda.gov.
