  • Minnesota youth stand out at national cattle convention

    Abbey, Shelby and Bailee Schiefelbein of Kimball, Minn., each placed in the top five of their age divisions at a youth public speaking contest at the 2012 Cattle Industry Convention in Nashville, Tenn. Abbey and Bailee each received a $300 check.

    KIMBALL, Minn. -- Minnesota youth placed high in competitions held at the recent 2012 Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen's Beef Association Trade Show in Nashville, Tenn.

  • Ford blazes bright trail with his diversified approach

    Jerry Ford (far right) and his wife, Marienne Kreitlow operate Living Song Farm near Howard Lake. The small farm is diversified and has stacked enterprises including a two-acre CSA operated by young farmers. Marienne's father, Willard, is a mentor to the couple. They represent the third and fourth generations to farm the land.

    HOWARD LAKE, Minn. -- A lot more is going on at Jerry Ford's Howard Lake farm than garlic production. The 288-acre farm is diversified between crops, rotational grazing of replacement heifers, laying hens and vegetables. And don't forget the stacked enterprises including two acres farmed by young producers selling fruits and vegetables through their Community Supported Agriculture operation, Sleepy Root Farm.
